SDU Hosts Annual Provost Premiere Showcase

As is tradition, the Speech and Debate Union (SDU) proudly hosted the annual Provost Premiere in Wrather Hall, an end-of-year showcase designed for the University Provost and other members of the administration. This year, we were especially honored to welcome President Emeritus Dr. Bob Jackson and Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Tim Todd, who came to witness firsthand the incredible skills our students have developed in less than a year.

To kick off the evening, Caleb McCurren delivered his nationally ranked After-Dinner Speech, which explores a thought-provoking question: What happens if Obergefell v. Hodges is overturned? His performance set a powerful and engaging tone for the evening.

Following the speech portion, the showcase transitioned into a live debate, highlighting the analytical and rhetorical skills our students gain as part of the SDU. This year’s debate resolution was: “The use of AI in the workforce is more beneficial than harmful.”

Arguing for the affirmative were national champions Sam Harless and Sam Miller, while Dr. Ryan Goke and SDU alumnus Josh Powers took the negation. Our panel of guest judges, Dr. Melony Shemberger, Dr. Melanie McCallon Seib, and Cayce Brunswick, ultimately voted 3–0 in favor of the negation, recognizing the strength and clarity of their arguments.

The evening concluded with heartfelt recognition of our Graduate Assistants, Ana Moyers and Jillian Rosa, who both graduated this spring. Their dedication, leadership, and mentorship have left a lasting impact on the team.

We are deeply grateful to our university administration for their continued support of the SDU. As we look ahead to a new season, we remain committed to empowering Murray State students with the confidence, communication, and critical thinking skills that last a lifetime. We look forward to working together to strengthen speech and debate across campus for generations to come.
